Shockwave therapy is designed to create micro-traumas in an injured or non functioning area. These microtraumas are created by rapid acoustic waves being sent into the body through a handheld instrument. When compressed air is applied, the handheld device has a bullet that bounces back and forth through a small chamber. A small amount of ultrasound gel is used to allow for free gliding of the device during the procedure. An average of 1500 to 3000 acoustic waves are sent into the specific area during the treatment.

Because these waves create micro-traumas, the body sends an increased blood supply to the traumatized area. The increased blood brings healing agents such as oxygen, collagen, white blood cells and platelets to aid in the healing process. It also increases tissue repair and regeneration along with decreasing pain reception. Another benefit is that it helps to break up calcium deposits in the tendons. All these benefits help the body start to heal itself.

We have used shockwave therapy to treat many conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, meniscus problems in the knees, tendonitis, back and neck pain, frozen shoulder, shoulder pain, etc.

Treatment usually consists of a 6-12 series of visits about 3-6 days apart to achieve optimal success.

The procedure can be slightly uncomfortable, but most patients have no problem with it and say that it feels good.

Overall, shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical intervention for the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions whether acute or chronic.

At Summit View Health Center, our experienced team will create a personalized shockwave therapy plan tailored to your unique needs. Experience the difference expert care can make. Call us now to book your appointment.
