Therapeutic ultrasound is commonly used to treat injuries involving soft tissues, joints, and muscle spasms. Though it shares a name with diagnostic ultrasound, it differs significantly in its application and purpose.

What is Therapeutic Ultrasound?

Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that are beyond the range of human hearing. When directed at affected areas in soft tissues and joints, these sound waves generate heat, which helps reduce inflammation, improve blood circulation, and alleviate pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms. Additionally, therapeutic ultrasound is believed to support the body’s healing process.

How Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Work?

While the effects and purpose of therapeutic ultrasound differ from diagnostic ultrasound, the application process is quite similar. If you’ve had an ultrasound screening before, you may recognize the technique.

An ultrasound device, often referred to as a ‘wand,’ is gently moved over the skin at the area of pain or injury. We will apply ultrasound gel to your skin to minimize friction and enhance the effectiveness of the sound wave transmission. Despite the deep-tissue heat generated during the treatment, most patients experience little to no sensation of heat.

Therapeutic ultrasound has been shown to aid in the body’s healing at a cellular level. Contact our office today to learn how therapeutic ultrasound might help support your recovery.
